Folklorama 2007Sunday, August 12 - Saturday, August 18The Canadian Slovenian Cultural Society was once again a sponsor of the Slovenija pavilion during Folklorama 2007. This is truly an endeavor that is quite large for our community, but we love to work at this festival, and showcase our beautiful Slovenian culture. In the year 2007, the Slovenija pavilion was located at Tec Voc High School, and with this new venue, we acquired the use of a commercial kitchen, and a professional theatre. The kitchen was second to none, and the entertainment truly took centre stage with the use of the theatre. The planning for Folklorama began early in the year, and our coordinators, Ron Thiffeault and Stan Majowski did a great job putting together a great team and pulling all the pieces together. When people come to the Slovenija pavilion, they meet many facets of our community. First up, our guests are greeted by our admission volunteers, who ensured our guests were greeted and let into the pavilion quickly. Once in the pavilion, people head for the food, as our pavilion is famous throughout Folklorama for our food. Our kitchen had a wonderful menu of food, including our famous barbecue pork and chicken. The line was very long during the supper time period, and our visitors left with the stomach’s full! While having supper, they could also sample some Slovenian beer, ‘Union Pivo’, or Slovenian wine from the Goriška Brda winery. And what would a Slovenian home be, without pastry. From mouthwatering tortes, to exquisite strudel’s to a wide assortment of cookies, there was something for every sweet tooth! After eating, our guests made their way through the pavilion, and partook in our cultural display, and got to know a little bit about Slovenija, whether it was the capital Ljubljana or the lovely regions located throughout the country! Many questions were asked, and our volunteers did a great job of informing our guest about Slovenija, located on the ‘Sunny Side of the Alps’. Then it was onto to the show. This year, our three dance groups, Zvoncek, Rozmarin and Triglav, together with our men’s singing group Zvon and solo singers, Vladka Pikel and Hilda Terry did a masterful job of entertaining our guests. This year, we were very fortunate to have with us, for the first time, an authentic Slovenian Kurent, and our senior dancers Triglav incorporated our Kurent into a suite of Mardi Gras dances from the Štajerska region. The show was extremely well received by our guests! After the show, it was time to say good bye to our guests, but not without having them purchase a CD of Slovenian music, or perhaps a tray of pastries ‘to go’. On their way out, our dancers entertained them by serenading our guests out of the pavilion.
