Folklorama 2001 - Wrap Up
Folklorama for the Slovenija Pavilion took place from August 12 to 18, 2001. It was a great week. For this year, we experimented some more and we saw the following new items in our pavilion:
*New Bela Krajina costumes for Triglav.
* Our Pavilion Ambassador, Natalija Zmavc, being selected one of the two adult Ambassador Generals to represent all of Folklorama. (Click here)
* New dances by all four dance groups, courtesy of our cultural exchange during the summer of 2000.
* New bigger tent (60 feet by 90 feet), that allowed the main stage to remain in the centre.
* Food service took place under the tent. Our ladies no longer had to stay in the hall to serve our delicious food, but joined us in the outdoor setting in the tent.
* An expanded cultural display area, due to the relocation of the food serving area outdoors.
* Many new items in our cultural display, including many additional costumes
* The opportunity to place your head through a picture and have your picture taken, while looking like you are wearing Gorenjska costumes.
The planning for Folklorama is an exhaustive affair, but our co-ordinator, Linda Casar did a great job of assembling her team, and ensuring that the pavilion was run first class. Great job Linda!
When the first day began, the entertainment took front stage and many people enjoyed the shows. As mentioned above, all the dance groups added new dances this year to our showcase, and Triglav was very proud to have added to their repertoire - costumes, dances and songs from the Bela Krajina region of Slovenia. All of these new dances and songs were possible because of the cultural exchange that Triglav participated in, during the summer of 2000.
By moving the serving of the food serving under the tent, we welcomed the ladies who work so hard, to the main area of our pavilion. It was nice to see them enjoying the outdoor setting and the shows. From the feedback we received, this change worked out very well.
From a bar perspective, we definitely had a Slovenian influence. We featured Union Pivo directly from Slovenia, as well as four different wines. We can still obtain these products, so if you would be interested in purchasing some, please email us at info@canadianslovenian.mb.ca and we will work with you to get you these products.
As usual, we also had our traditional barbecue of roast pork and chicken. Judging by how it was selling, visitors to our pavilion still crave and desire this speciality.
We would like to thank our sponsors who supported us this year at Folklorama:
* Sobey’s West / IGA
* De Luca’s
* Karpaty Meats and Deli
* Fort Garry Brewing Company
We had a great Folklorama 2001. We look forward to sharing our culture with more visitors during Folklorama 2002.
