Friday, July 5th was a great day for the Canadian Slovenian Cultural Society (CSCS), its members and friends. On this day, we hosted a fabulous group of musicians and singers from Slovenia at our picnic grounds. Kvintet Dori, put on an absolutely breathtaking show.
As people streamed into our picnic grounds on that evening, you can tell everyone was looking forward to the evening. It had been five years since Slovenians in Winnipeg had hosted a band from Slovenia, and you could tell people were excited.
After most people had a good supper of barbecued pork or chicken, the crowd was anxious to see these musicians that came to us from Slovenia. Master of ceremonies Steve Casar welcomed Kvintet Dori to Winnipeg and to our community. The Past President of the CSCS, Stan Majowski, also welcomed Dori in Slovenian, and presented them with a small gift and memento of Winnipeg.
At 7:00, Kvintet Dori took too the stage. The initial reaction from our members and friends was, ‘look how young these boys are’. Once they began singing and playing the reaction turned to ‘look how talented these boys are’.
The repertoire of music was great. From capellas to waltzes to polkas, all types of music were covered quickly. One of their early songs was ‘Avto Moj Ne Ve’, which won the Best Polka award at the Slovenian Polka and Waltz Festival, 2000. In no time at all, the dance floor was packed and everyone was enjoying themselves.
After a few sets of traditional music, Dori played a set of rock and roll, and the younger members of our community took to the dance floor. They truly played music for all!
While on breaks, Dori easily conversed with our community. The younger ladies of our community certainly took a shining to the band, and spent many breaks talking to the members of Dori.
Unfortunately, the evening came to a close much too soon. It seemed like it just started, and before we knew, it was ending. But even though it did end, a great time was had by all that attended.
A big thank you and ‘hvala lepa’ to the members of Kvintet Dori: Marko, Primoz, Boris, Anti and Bostjan for coming to Winnipeg, and bringing a piece of Slovenia to us. Our thanks also go out to Bill and Lojze Kocjancic in Toronto, who worked with the CSCS to bring Dori to Winnipeg. And finally to all our members who worked so hard to make this event and evening a success.
We hope to have many Slovenian bands visit Winnipeg in the future years.
