CSCS 50th Anniversary
September 29 & 30, 2001
(continued)
Sunday started at 9:30, with a High Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, with co-celebrants, Father Paul Hancko and Father Ivan Plazar. There were many a tired people in church that morning, but all had a smile on their face that was impossible to erase! Upon completion of Mass, the entire congregation made its way to the hill alongside the Disraeli Freeway for a commemorative picture. After the picture it was into the church hall for coffee and some treats.
Later on in the afternoon, our community gathered at our picnic grounds, just outside the city of Winnipeg. Within the first hour we had over 150 people, who enjoyed an absolutely beautiful fall day in Winnipeg. The temperature was in the 20’s, and there was not a cloud in the sky. Someone very special was smiling on our community!
While at the picnic ground, Planinski Kvintet entertained us further with beautiful melodies from Slovenia, and were joined by ladies and men joining them in song. Andy and Dennis picked up some instruments as well, and joined in the jam session. Our children were off playing football and others played on the playground structures, while the adults just gathered around the picnic tables and enjoyed each other’s company. Some people kicked up their heels, and danced right on the grass. In some ways, seeing our community here, it really looked like a piece of utopia was amongst us.
Unfortunately at 5:00, Planinski Kvintet had to depart, as they had to head back home to Toronto. For their last song, they stood on a couple of picnic tables, and let loose one more song. Wow, did the people ever respond. It was a great ending!
As they loaded their van, Joe Pinter pulled out his button box, and with our community, serenaded Planinski Kvintet. Both parties did not want this weekend to end, but unfortunately it had to, and we can only hope that Planinski Kvintet was as touched by us, as we were by them. A huge thanks to Danny, Bill, Max, Milan, Eric and Mike of Planinski Kvintet for adding a very special touch to our celebrations. We hope to see you guys back in Winnipeg in the not too distant future!
After our band left, we started to disperse, all somewhat saddened by the end of this weekend. But while we may have been sad, what an incredible weekend it was! The memories will be everlasting and the good times will be remembered far into the future. It was definitely worth it.
