Zvonček Dancers

The Zvonček Dance Ensemble is the youngest performing Slovenian dance group in Winnipeg. It was established in 1974, and started in order to include the younger children in the Winnipeg Slovenian community.

Today, the Zvonček dance ensemble consists of 13 children ranging between the ages of 4 and 9 and is taught by Irena Hibbert, Barb Sobocan, and Helen Fewster, who was one of the original members of the group 27 years ago. The children practice from January to August and are a delight to watch as they perform during the Folklorama festival in August. The Zvonček dancers have also performed at picnic ground functions and various nursing homes. To view a sample of the dances performed please click here.

The traditional dances originally taught still continue to be part of the Zvonček repertoire along with newly choreographed performances. In the past the children have worn the traditional costume from the Gorenjska region of Slovenia. A recent wardrobe change has included the new Dolenska costumes the children now wear.

Each year the group embarks on learning new dances, new songs. The children of the Zvoncek dance group enjoy a year full of fun while learning and maintaining a strong part of their cultural heritage.
